Manipulated Photography by Kathy Grove
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is presenting an astonishing exhibition entitled Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop. The high priestess of the genre is Kathy Grove. We discussed her work last December in our Who’s Who column.
Kathy Grove recreates icons of photography and painting, excluding any masculine presence, and by erasing the lived experience of the female subject through the magic of plastic surgery via the airbrush. Here are a few examples of her work currently on display. The Other Series shown here were made at the onset of this ongoing project between 1987 and 1994.
